Save Your Pits! Avoid the Dangers of Toxic Deodorants & Antiperspirants.

Schmidt's_Natural_Deodorantby Kerrie Bross

If you’re looking to eliminate toxins in your everyday life, then toss your villainnous deodorants and antiperspirants. Most deodorants and antiperspirants are loaded with toxic ingredients linked to many diseases. Check out the list below to see what toxins may be lurking in your stick. Or skip right to the end to see our new all natural deodorant line.

Common Toxins in Deodorants & Antiperspirants

Aluminum-Based Compounds – Aluminum compounds are the ingredients responsible for clogging the pores in the underarm area, thereby reducing sweating. Studies suggest there is a relationship between underarm antiperspirants/deodorant use and the development of breast and prostate cancer due to the aluminum compounds messing with estrogen levels. Other studies suggest that increased aluminum compounds in the avoid_toxic_deodorantbody may disrupt proper neurological function and can lead to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Need another reason to avoid deodorants with aluminum? Aluminum kills the less odor-causing bacteria in our armpits, making it so the more odor-causing bacteria can thrive. That’s right, the use of deodorants and antiperspirants with aluminum actually make us more smelly. Natural deodorants with no aluminum will automatically help with odor because they don’t kill the beneficial bacteria in our armpits.

Parabens – Parabens are the preservatives most often used in the skincare industry. They get into our system quickly, even when applied topically, and mimic estrogen. Although they are only found in minuscule amounts in deodorant or antiperspirant, they are found in so many products that it can add up quickly. The big concern is the cumulative damage done from years of repeated daily exposure. Interfering with estrogen has been linked with breast cancer, in both women and men, and prostate cancer. Look for natural deodorants, sunscreen and other skincare without nasty parabens.

Phthalates – Phthalates are often hidden on skincare labels as “fragrance” but are plasticizing chemicals often used for their texture and their ability to help dissolve other ingredients. Phthalates is actually a huge class of chemicals, and not nearly all of them have been studied, but those studied have shown scary results. In the past few years, researchers have linked phthalates to multiple neurological issues like low IQ, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders and other neuro-developmental issues & behavioral issues. They have been connected with breathing problems like asthma. Some other biggies researchers found links to are breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, as well as altered reproductive development and male fertility issues. Clearly, the less we get of these in our bodies, the better! A good natural deodorant will not contain any phthalates or artificial fragrance.

Propylene Glycol – Propylene Glycol is another ingredient that has multiple questionable health risks. It is a common food additive and is often used as a base for many skin care products. Although it is FDA approved, toxic levels have been associated with cancer, heart  disease, reproductive issues, developmental abnormalities, and endocrine complications. Many people get skin irritations or have allergic reactions to this common ingredient. Infants cannot properly process Propylene Glycol, meaning they can get toxic levels in a much shorter amount of time than adults. Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid it. Lastly, Propylene Glycol helps the body better absorb anything it comes in contact with, making it easier for other toxins to enter our bodies. Again, check your labels. Natural deodorants will not contain this toxic chemical.

Triethanolamine (TEA) & Diethanolamine (DEA) – TEA and DEA are known carcinogenic chemicals that can permeate the skin and negatively affect the liver and kidneys. Europe has already banned the use of these chemicals because of their known cancer-causing risks. And so have all the manufacturers of quality natural deodorants.

What Should You Use Instead of Toxic Deodorants & Antiperspirants?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to walk around a sweaty, smelly mess to have healthy armpits. Just switch to a non-toxic product like Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant. Schmidt’s Naturals was started in 2010 when the founder was pregnant and on a mission to develop a natural Schmidt's_sensitive_skin_natural_deodorantdeodorant that was actually effective. And we think she did a fantastic job of it!

Schmidt’s invests in research and testing to ensure their deodorants are all natural, non-toxic and free of any controversial or filler ingredients. Schmidt’s developed their award-winning formula to naturally and effectively neutralizes odor without the use of aluminum or any other toxic ingredients. And it is 100% made in the USA!

Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant is enriched with natural minerals and essential oils, contains no artificial fragrance, and is easily absorbed so you only need to use a small amount. What’s more, they use natural powders to help absorb wetness. Schmidt’s Deodorant is also cruelty- and gluten-free and certified Vegan.

We Put Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant to the Test!

The last natural deodorant I tried gave me quite an irritation and even a weird bump under my armpit after using it for a while. These went away when I stopped using it, so I blame the deodorant. I’ve tried other brands that seem more like I’m spraying on a nice fragrance to mask my own smell. They didn’t really work on odor or wetness. I decided to try Schmidt’s Geranium Sensitive Skin Formula for myself because of my reaction to the last natural deodorant. I am extremely impressed!  Firstly, it goes on very easily, very smoothly. I tried a couple different brands that the texture was so bad – too thick and sticky even – that I had to toss them. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorants have a great smooth texture that goes on easily.

I know what you’re thinking. Nice texture is all well and good, but does it work on odor and wetness? Well, we got our initial order of Schmidt’s Naturals at the end of last week, right before a weekend of skiing at Attitash Mountain and dancing our butts off. It is late in the season, soNatural_antiperspirant it was a little warm for skiing in the Northeast, in the 40’s. But, it withstood the potential stink of a teenager skiing on a warm day! And, Saturday night was a huge party and dance night with a super fun 70’s band, Motor Booty Affair. I was out on the dance floor shaking my booty, literally shoulder to shoulder, with a crowd of people. At the end of the night I was not stinky and I had no sweat stains under the armpits of my silky long-sleeve shirt. So impressed!

Test Schmidt’s For Yourself!

We put it to our tests, and think you will be equally impressed when you put it to your tests. Give any Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant a try, and if you don’t like it, send it back. We have a 60 day money-back guarantee on all Schmidt’s products. Let us know what tests your Schmidt’s Natural Deodorants pass!

Eureka! See The Amazing Detox Face Mask You Make At Home

homemade_bentonite_clay_mask

This past year my favorite bentonite clay company discontinued their detox facial scrub and I was sooo bummed! I used it in the shower a few times a week for years! I’ve taken it upon myself to come up with a comparable product that I can make at home with my own ingredients. The scrub Living Clay made had crushed walnut shells to exfoliate and peppermint oil to invigorate. Our basic recipe has none of those so is good for sensitive skin as well. Then you can customize it for exfoliating, invigorating or soothing depending on what extra ingredients you add.

The basic detox facial mask uses a bentonite clay paste for the detox part of the recipe. Bentonite clay is an amazing natural detoxing agent that works by binding to bacteria and toxins on the surface of the skin and deep in the pores to extract them out and wash them away. It also has antibiotic properties to aid healing and fight infections. People have also observed a soothing effect from using a bentonite clay mask. Make sure to always hydrate  bentonite clay in a glass jar because it can pull impurities from plastic once it is rehydrated.

Manuka honey is added for its many potential medicinal properties. These include:

  • Antibiotic properties to help alleviate blemishes
  • Anti-inflammatory to sooth skin
  • Helps balance skin’s pH
  • Contains amino acids to help slough away dead skin cells
  • Promotes collagen growth for firmer, younger looking skin
  • Natural humectant to draw moisture into the skin, which enhances skin elasticity and cell regeneration
  • Promotes healing

I added Walkabout Emu Oil to further sooth, heal and moisturize the skin. Potential benefits of emu oil for skin include:

  • Naturally high in antioxidant Vitamin E
  • Contains Omega 3, Omega 6 & Omega 9 which are vital to healthy skin
  • Super noncomedogenic moisturizer
  • Anti-inflammatory to soothe skin
  • Promotes cell regeneration & healing

Basic Detox Face & Body Maskeasy_homemade_face_mask

Ingredients:

1 1/2 Tb Living Clay Bentonite Clay Powder
1 1/2 Tb Wedderspoon Raw Manuka Honey
1/2 Tb Walkabout Topical Emu Oil
1 1/2 Tb warm water

Directions:
Mix the bentonite and water to make a paste first. Then add the honey and emu oil and mix thoroughly. Make sure to always use glass whenever possible when bentonite clay is activated with water – it can pull impurities from plastic as well as your skin. And stir with a wooden stirrer as it can also pull things from metal. this recipe makes about 2 oz of finished product. Store in an airtight glass container. As all ingredients have very long shelf lives, it should keep for months.

Once made, it can be used as a daily cleanser that you put on and wash off right away, or as a deep cleansing mask that you let dry on your face before you wash it off. For best results, use a hot washcloth to rehydrate the mask for easier removal. Your skin will feel wonderful after!

Natural Invigorating Face & Body Scrub

If you want to make this an eye-opening morning scrub, then add these additional ingredients: 1 tsp coffee grounds & 6 or more drops peppermint essential oils.

So, I knew right away there was no way I was getting crushed walnut shells for my recipe, so I searched for alternative exfoliants. My first thought was sugar, because I’ve seen that used quite a bit. But, I don’t eat white sugar because it is toxic, so why would I put it on my skin?  I used coffee grounds instead. Coffee grounds are a good alternative because the caffeine can enhance fat metabolism and increase circulation, which may help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Use this all over and the exfoliating properties will certainly make your skin soft and smooth!

I used peppermint oil because it is super invigorating and leaves the skin feeling tingly and refreshed. Different brands have different quality oils. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on high end essential oils to get a quality peppermint oil.

Super Soothing Facial Mask

To make this a soothing face mask, use calendula tea instead of water, and add 6 or more drops of either lavender essential oil, calendula essential oil or a combination of the two. Calendula has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and healing properties to soothe sensitive skin. Lavender oil also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties which help with healing of many skin issues. And it smells so nice, it helps us feel relaxed and refreshed all at the same time.

Best Tips to Keep Kids Healthy Naturally This Summer

summer_kids_2016

Are Your Blonds Looking a Little Green?

When the heavy metal content of your swimming pool rises, the excess copper in the water can turn blond hair green. Don’t fret; just dissolve 1 teaspoon of Catie’s Vitamin C Powder in a pint-sized spray bottle. Spray it all over, rub in, and rinse after fifteen minutes.

Prevent & Treat Swimmer’s Ear Naturally

Water trapped in the outer ear canal allows bacterial growth and may cause an infection known as swimmers ear. This can be prevented or treated naturally and effectively without harsh antibiotics.
Prevention:  Place 3 drops of Sovereign Silver in each ear once a week.
Treatment: First cleanse the ear by filling with peroxide: allow to bubble and sit a few minutes. Then, drain it and dry with a tissue. Once dry, add 3 drops of Sovereign Silver to the ear and allow it to sit for three minutes. Insert a cotton ball to keep it from leaking out. Do this 2-3 times a day when signs of an infection arise.

Avoid Mosquitios & Ticks Without Using DEET

Use all-natural, DEET-free Mercola Insect Repellent to prevent mosquito and tick bites on your outdoor adventures.

Protect From Sunburn With Safe, Waterproof Sunblock

Choose an EWG-approved physical sunblock likeThinksport Kids to protect delicate skin from sunburns without dousing them in toxic chemicals.

Maintain Active Energy Levels & Boost Immunity

Keep your children healthy and active with whole-food vitamin supplements like Garden of Life Vitamin Code Kids.

Replenish Vital Electrolytes with Homemade Sports Drinks

Make a healthy, homemade sports drink out of your child’s favorite 100% juice! Use 2 cups water, 2 cups 100% juice and 1/4 tsp real sea salt. Don’t use table salt because it is missing many of the vital trace minerals found in real sea salt. Himalayan and Celtic sea salt are excellent for this.

Five fun things to do with your kids before Summer fizzles.

physical_sunblock_family_fun

1. Berry Picking

Summer is a time when fresh berries abound. In the northeast, it starts in June with strawberries, which is followed quickly by raspberries and blackberries, then blueberries and so on. My family always went berry picking in the summer when I was a kid. We’d eat the fruit right off the plants, and pick some for later, too. I have many fond memories of fruit picking from my childhood and hope my kids will, too.

Don’t forget:
1. Sunscreen – many berry patches and fields are in direct sun
2. Bugspray – you never know when or where the bugs will be biting
3. Cash – many small farms are cash only

2. Go to a Beach – Any Pond, Lake, Ocean, or Even a River

What a blast it is spending a hot Summer day by the water! It might be an ordeal to pack everything up, but it’s such fun when you get there. We love sitting and making sand castles or other sand sculptures.

Don’t forget:
1. Waterproof sunblock – obviously
2. Bathing suits & towels
3. Lots of water to drink
4. Lunch and/or snacks for the hord or cash to buy lunch there
5. Change of clothes that aren’t all sandy
6. Sand toys for the kids
7. Boogie board for beach with waves

3. Observe the Night Sky

There are so many apps for devices, pick one to help explain what constellations you are looking at on any given night. Or you can get a book from the library if you may be out of range on your device. For best viewing, get out of a city and in a place far from city lights. To see a guide of predicted meteor showers for 2016, visit earthsky.org for best times and places to view upcoming meteor showers.

Don’t forget:
1. Deet free insect repellent – outdoors at night brings mosquitos and other biting insects
2. Binoculars, or telescope if you have it
3. Beach lounge chair or blanket to sit or lie on
4. Warm clothes to add on in case you get cold
5. Drinks & snacks if you plan on being a little while

4. Take a Hike – Preferrably to a Swimming Hole

Last Summer we vacationed in New Hampshire and hiked every day. But, because it was hot, and we wanted to keep the kids encouraged, we hiked to places where we could jump in cool refreshing water. For a guide to over 1600 natural places to take a dip in USA and Canada, visit swimmingholes.org.

Don’t forget:
1. Bugspray – preferrably the non-toxic variety
2. Waterproof sunblock
3. Bathingsuits & towels
4. Water shoes may come in handy
5. Lots of water to stay hydrated on the hike
6. Granola bars or fruit and nuts to keep your energy up if you plan on hiking for a few hours

5. Go to an Amusement Park

This is actually a no-brainer. Kids love amusement parks, as do many adults, and Summer is the ideal time to go. Parks tend to be open later in the Summer and, as it’s their busy time, usually all the rides are open. If you can go midweek, you will find the lines are a bit better. You can keep the cost down a bit if you pack a cooler and go out to the car to eat lunch, although many parks now offer a meal plan as an option when buying tickets.

Don’t forget:
1. Good sunblock
2. Warm clothes to add on if it gets cool at night
3. Lots of water to stay hydrated
4. Granola bars or fruit & nuts for energy boosting snacks

Natural Sunscreens: Carefree Fun in the Summer Sun

Natural_sunscreens_sale
“Summer Afternoon: To me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English Language.”

Henry James

Summer has always been my favorite time of year. I feel giddy and free: ready to drop everything for a spontaneous gathering, a delicious swim in the ocean, or a sunset music festival. It must be something about shedding all those layers of warm clothing, going barefoot, and feeling the warm air on my skin. I am high on sunshine with more energy and enthusiasm for socializing and being outside. Graduations, reunions, weddings, and garden parties fill the calendar. Its time to make plans for yard sales, camping trips, picnics by the sea, hikes in the mountains, and (my personal favorite) long naps in the hammock. Its time to get outside and get some sun!

Accessorize

There are a few accessories I need to maximize my summer enjoyment. The first is a good book. I’m compiling my summer reading list with eagerness akin to a puppy chasing a ball!  The second is lots of summer foods like luscious fruits and the freshest of fresh garden grown veggies. There is nothing so inspiring as knowing where my food was growing the day before! My third “must have” is a great pair of flip flops perfect for kicking off and running through the grass or wiggling my toes in beach sand. But in my “shoes are optional” world, sunscreen is unfortunately not. It’s a fact of life that must be acknowledged and dealt with. Luckily Peaceful Planet has some great all natural sunscreens as well as a few not so well known secrets for keeping your tan lines radiant and not injurious.

Effective and Safe Sunscreen

I’ll bet you think you’ve heard it all before when it comes to the need for sunscreen? We all get it that these days the ozone is thinning causing the ultraviolet light to pass easily through the atmosphere to burn and damage our skin even more than it did a few decades ago. Who hasn’t had an awful red, painful sunburn at some point? But what’s even worse is the potential for life threatening consequences many years after the burn. So along with your favorite summer accessories, plan to apply and then pack along a great mineral based, non-toxic sunscreen. Thinksport and Thinksport Kids both have an SPF rating of 50 for complete sun block in and out of the water. Free of hormone altering chemicals, these sunscreens block UVA and UVB rays with micronized zinc oxide, a physical barrier. Consistently rated among the highest for safety and efficacy by the Environmental Working Group Sunscreen Guide, Thinksport sunscreens are the sun worshiper’s best friend. Dr Mercola Broad Spectrum Sunscreens come in SPF 15 for light and SPF 30 for moderate protection. Rated a number “1” by the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep database for safety and efficacy, Mercola’s Sunscreen provides broad spectrum UV protection with no synthetic chemicals. Only antioxidant rich natural oils moisturize and nourish the skin for protection and therapy in one treatment!

How about Astaxanthin?

Now for what you may not know: Astaxanthin is an extremely potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory carotenoid obtained from marine algae. Along with being good for eye health, brain health, joint pain, and athletic stamina, Astaxanthin has been called a “natural sunscreen” due to it’s ability to protect skin from damaging free radicals after sun exposure. By reducing oxidative damage to the skin, Astaxanthin keeps skin looking younger. It even may fade sun spots!   Dr Mercola calls Astaxanthin “the supplement everyone should be taking.” Check out more of the many benefits of Mercola Astaxanthin.

Melatonin For Sun?

Melatonin, the naturally occurring hormone that regulates healthy sleep/wake cycles, also has a surprising connection to sun protection. Studies have found that melatonin applied topically before sun exposure can lessen the risk of burning or damaging skin. Of course, Melatonin will also probably make you sleepy, so you might want to use it only when you plan to be napping in the sun!  In addition, use Mercola Melatonin at night on the face and neck to build collagen and elastin. Not only will it help you to sleep, but its antioxidant properties will help heal the aging effects of sun damage.

The Emu Edge

Another valuable source of sun protection comes from emu oil, the “sacred food” of the Australian Aborigines. Studies have shown that emu oil, either taken orally or applied topically, can help decrease effects of the sun such as wrinkles, dryness, and sun spots. Keep skin looking youthful with Walkabout Emu Oil from free range, humanely farmed emus in Australia. Only lightly refined, Walkabout Emu Oil is pure, natural protection from the sun.

Vitamin Power

High doses of Vitamin E together with vitamin C may protect the skin from UV radiation and sunburn. In addition, we must get sufficient vitamin D3.  D3 is critical for a healthy immune system, strong bones, good mental cognition, and for protecting us from many diseases. D3 can be obtained from a few types of foods such as fatty fish, but our best source of D3 is sunshine!

 Don’t Shun the Sun

So get out there and have some fun! Just remember to protect your summer state of mind with sunscreens, vitamins, and emu oil. Hello sunshine!

Emu Oil: Sacred Healing Food Revealed

Walkabout_Emu_oil_sale
The Australian Aborigines are one of the most ancient and still living primitive societies on the planet. For eons they have utilized traditional health practices and retained their robust health. The Aborigines prized emu fat as one of their “sacred foods” for health and healing and have long incorporated it into their mythical “dreamtime” spirituality. Because the emu shares the inhospitable Australian Outback environment with the Aborigines and manages to survive well on only its fat reserves, the fat was revered as a precious food and medicine by the traditional culture. Weston A. Price, the famous dentist and nutritionist of the 20th century who studied the Australian Aborigines as well as other indigenous groups, proclaimed their diets to be rich in fat soluble vitamins and activators which accounted for their low incidence of chronic health problems as compared with people in the developed world. Perhaps the time has come to bring a little “sacred” healing oil into our own lives?

Walkabout Emu Oil

Emus are large birds, native to Australia and similar looking to Ostriches. They cannot fly, but they can do something perhaps even more amazing!  They can go without food, essentially fasting, for months at a time usually while sitting on their nest. In order to endure this long period of nutritional deprivation, emus have an ability to store nutrient dense fat in a special fat pocket on their back. Until recently, Emus living in the wild had higher quality oil than those raised commercially. Now Walkabout has been able to replicate this potent wild emu oil by raising emus on Australian farms using their natural habitats and food sources. Raised as genetically distinct groups with no crossbreeding, Walkabout emus are specific genotypes ensuring the highest quality oil. Walkbout Emu Oil is guaranteed to meet strict standards for purity and quality. It is registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which oversees the production of natural supplements. Walkabout imports the Aborigine’s life-sustaining emu oil from Australia to treat your myriad of health and beauty needs.

Ancient and Modern Uses

Emu Oil can be taken orallyas  liquid or in capsules or applied topically and allowed to penetrate the skin with it’s healing qualities.

  • Emu oil is best known for reducing local and systemic inflammation often with fairly dramatic results.
  • It has been shown to reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints and to improve muscle strain, tendonitis, or bruising. Dr. Oz has recommended emu oil for relief of joint pain and sore muscles.
  • Since it is bacteriostatic, no bacteria can grow in it making it a sterile treatment for all sorts of skin ailments from eczema and psoriasis to reducing nail fungus and rashes.
  • Emu oil is remarkable in its capacity to thicken and strengthen skin so that it retains water thus healing chronic dry skin and treating sun damage and wrinkles.
  • A natural moisturizer, it conditions hair and even cures itchy scalp. Dr. Mercola recommends this as a great alternative moisturizer for the whole body.
  • The high bioavailability of nutrients in emu oil may assist in cardiovascular disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis, gum disease, high blood pressure, carpel tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, intestinal disorders, and even in decreasing allergic sensitivity among other things.
  • Loaded with vitamins K2 and D3, emu oil helps to repair and prevent tooth decay.

Emu Essentials

Emu oil is a whole food, not a manufactured vitamin compound. As such the miraculous benefits come from the synergy of nutrients found in precious combination in the oil. Nevertheless, it is possible to test for and quantify some of the components in order to better understand the harmony of vital healing agents. Walkabout Emu Oil has consistently shown to be higher in nutrients compared to other brands due to their free-range farming and feeding practices.

  • Omegas 3, 6, and 9: essential fatty acids necessary for growth, life energy, and skin regeneration.
  • Vitamin K2: the “Activator X” vitamin identified by Dr. Weston A. Price as potentiating many other nutrients. Recently, Sally Fallon of the Westin A Price Foundation tested many popular whole food oil supplements and Walkabout Emu Oil came out on top for having more vitamin K2 than the rest, sometimes 10 times as much!
  • Vitamin D3: critical vitamin for immunity, maintaining healthy bones, cognitive ability, and preventing multiple diseases.
  • Vitamin E: antioxidant for immunity, healthy skin and eyes, and physical performance
  • Vitamin A: antioxidant that repairs skin and provides antiseptic abilities.
  • CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid): decreases muscle and joint pain as well as assisting in fat metabolism and healthy weight maintenance.
  • Sapogens: skin softening agents

The Walkabout Way

Walkabout Emu Oil is refined by combining the best of traditional practices with modern day science. The unadulterated oil assures the best absorption and assimilation possible. Walkabout Emu oil is always Non-GMO, and is farmed on virgin soils with no pesticides, or chemicals. No artificial growth hormones, antibiotics, or vaccinations are given and there is virtually no waste in processing the animals as their meat, skin, feathers, and egg shells are all utilized commercially.

“Sacred Food”

The Australian Aborigines have practiced the spiritual healing journey known as a “walkabout” for thousands of years. During this solo rite of passage in nature that could last for weeks, male Aborigine youth tapped their inner resources to emerge stronger in body and mind. Emu oil is a traditional, nutrient dense, life sustaining food carried with them on this quest. Its pure and unadulterated power is now available to help transform your life as well. Discover the pristine whole food medicine of the traditional Australian Bushmen and find your own balance with nature.
